check this somewhat recent thread, the two most popular are discussed. You can go $70 for Stereo or $160-$200 and up for surround.
I went with the Turtle Beach $70 version. Very happy with the purchase.

Re: gaming headsets
I've heard a lot of good reviews on Turtle Beach headset. For that price, it's a steal. Thanks, dude.

Re: gaming headsets
The newer TB X21s have been updated from the older ones and are a lot more comfortable.
I've owned two pairs of them and I'm really impressed with them again. If you're willing to shell out a lot of money, I'd go ahead and say any model of Astros are a great buy. But for CoD, the TBs work just as well.
Also, if you get the TBs, turn the ingame volume down to about 40% and turn the headset up to a comfortable volume. That's what has worked the best for me so far. I also like to turn the bass up just a notch, though you might like no bass or tons of bass (which will rape your ears).
